Peter in 1 Peter 5: 8-9 warns us to, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.”
This is serious! The moment we become a Christian we do not go off to live happily ever after. We’ve only switched sides and have inherited the relentless enemy of our Lord Jesus Christ! Sadly though, many of his (Satan’s) victims do not even know there is a war going on, and make such easy prey. We as Christians need to know that we are in the midst of a great spiritual struggle daily. And even more important than understanding there is a battle going on, we need to understand the nature of our enemy’s cunning and crafty schemes, and the weapons which he is using against us. And also, the weapons which God has provided for our defense.
The most powerful being prayer! I believe what this study has taught me best is the need to pray, not only for myself, but for those I love most. Let’s pray:
I rejoice in knowing You hear me when I call upon You, Lord. You, who chooses to call me friend! You have already crushed our enemy and won the ultimate victory! You are the Alpha and Omega, the One who reigns forever more! You are the God of the angel armies who goes before me and comes running when I call. Whom have I to fear?
Still, You warn me to be watchful and encourage me to be strong in You, Lord and empowered through our union as one. Help me to lean on and draw my strength from You at all times, for Your strength limitless!
Help me to be mindful that I am not wrestling with flesh and blood but against the powers and rulers of this world; of this present darkness, and their ways are cunning and seek to destroy.
Help me put on the whole armor, that I may be able to resist and stand my ground during these evil days. No wavering, no retreating, enable me to stand firmly in my place against him.
Help me stand having tightened the belt of truth around our loins which is simply my integrity. And the breastplate of purity and moral rectitude and right standing with You. Along with these may I be shod with the Gospel of peace? Ah, that peaceful state of tranquility no matter what is raging on around me. May I also realize when my spirit is not at peace I need to call on You?
Help me to take up my shield of faith to protect me from all the flaming darts of doubt and fear the enemy will try to hurl my way. And cover my head with the helmet of salvation so that my mind will forever be under Your control to protect me from all the thoughts of discouragement and disillusionment that go against You and Your Word. And finally, let me wield the Sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word to combat all the enemies lies.
Father, how wonderful it is to be assured that I can stand firm against my enemy when I have my armor on. And I do stand in that promise, ready to know how to tap into Your strength; to be strong in Your power and might. Please continue to open Your truths up to me and help me to live triumphantly for Your glory until You call me home, for it is in the power of the Name that is above all names that I ask all this. Amen
