Paul has spent much of this book to the Ephesians explaining all we’ve been given in Christ Jesus and now begins to reveal what we, as a new creation, ought to look like! Whew! Just imagine a Christian community in the midst of this world who never lied, but always spoke the truth. A people who never got angry, but always acted in love. A people who would never steal, but were always honest in their dealings with others and always sought to share with others in need!
Imagine if we were a people who never spoke with course jesting or in an unwholesome way, but always minister grace to those listening. If we could instantly deal with all bitterness, wrath, anger, evil speaking immediately, before we risked harming another, and were characterized by our incredible kindness, tenderness and forgiveness toward others. Just imagine the testimony His people would have then! The great news is all of this is absolutely possible!! OK, we can’t speak for others, but we can begin putting off the old self and “walking in a manner worthy of our calling” today!! Let’s pray:
Father, You have searched us and know us. You discern our thoughts from afar. Even before a word is on our tongue, behold, O LORD, You know it! You hem us in behind and before and set Your hand upon us!
Father, we come before You agreeing with what Your Spirit has already spoke in our hearts this week. We can see the areas where we’ve often fallen short in the way we’ve spoken to or about those we love most in this world. We’ve all fought through the battles of anger and unforgiveness at times. Father, help us to know the victory that only You can give so that on the one hand we never give place to the devil and on the other hand, we won’t grieve Your Holy Spirit who has given us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue.
Father we thank You that You never lower Your standards, but rather You gave us Your Spirit, Your Word and prayer to meet Your standard. Father, we pray for more of You, we want all, everything you have for us, and we do not want to limit ourselves with only what we can do for You, Lord. Father, once more we draw close, seeking Your forgiveness where we’ve failed and Your filling of Your Spirit to unable us to put off our former life and to adorn the new nature with a new man. And Lord we do pray that we might so live to bring You praise!!
For Your glory with thanksgiving for all You are we ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
