Keeping Jesus our Focus this Christmas

Hey everyone, Merry Christmas!!! I just wanted to offer a quick reminder that though this time of year can be quite hectic, it is so very important to daily remind our children the reason for our celebration. If we are not careful they can begin to focus on what they get and not Christ. One tradition we hold to is three presents. Jesus received three presents so it is another good reminder of Christ. Below are a few other ways we strive to make Christ our focus.

Our family participated in advent for a few years before hearing about a Jesse Tree. It begins December 1st and continues until Christmas with a scripture passage to read daily beginning with creation and ending with the birth of Christ showing God’s plan throughout the Bible for a Savior. I used Let’s Make a Jesse Tree by Darcy James. (Mine is pictured here.) While it is to late this year to make one (because it takes quite a while to make), you could still look up scriptures or advent calenders and daily read through passages pointing to the coming Messiah. Here is a link to Billy Graham’s advent readings you can download for free.

Also we usually have them pick something to give through Samaritan’s Purse as one of the three. They can choose to stock a pond, buy chicks for a family, buy a goat, buy fruit trees… the list goes on and on. (Gift options are available ranging from $2 to over a hundred.) Here is a link to their Christmas catalog. They truly do enjoy this gift. My oldest often thinks about the people able to fish and get food because of the ponds he has chosen to stock over the years. This is also a good option for friends/ family.

A couple of good Christmas reads: One Wintry Night by Ruth Bell Graham is a wonderful book for children with a retelling of the Christmas story through a story. It is great and my children all truly enjoy the book. Another great read for Christmas is Keeping Holiday by Starr Meade. It is a great book to read through with children this time of year about the true meaning of Christmas. No more details because I wouldn’t want to spoil the plot.

One last thing: Two of our favorite CDs at Christmas are Behold the Lamb of God by Andrew Peterson and Handel’s Messiah~ makes me think how beautiful the heavenly angels will sound!

What an absolutely glorious time of year!!! Hope you are all having a wonderful, Christ filled Christmas season!
