Resolutions ~ M & M Monday

*** This post contains some important T2 Women News at the very end that we don’t want you to miss!***

In less than 24 hours, we’ll be ringing in 2013. It’s time for those New Year’s resolutions. I’ve not thought about resolutions these last weeks though. Sure I could stand to lose a few pounds …. okay maybe a few more than a few! Exercising would be beneficial. Healthier food choices wouldn’t hurt either. Resolutions of the spiritual nature would be a wise choice. But as soon as I make them, I’ll break them. Failure abounds and resolutions are forgotten as the calendar pages turn over and over until it’s time to make those resolutions again. I don”t have the energy or time to think about resolutions no matter how good they may be right now. And that’s okay with me and it’s not because I’m giving myself an excuse to not exercise or eat healthier. And I’m not forsaking those spiritual disciplines that grow my faith and relationship with Christ. Yes, I’ll keep plugging away memorizing our M & M Monday verses but to make resolutions as this time of year dictates, it’s not happening here.

But there is a word that has been in the forefront of my thoughts these last months. A word that I will focus on walking in obedience to in 2013. Sometimes, well most times if we’re honest, we would prefer the circumstances of life to change but God’s preference overrides ours and we find ourselves having to surrender to His will – sometimes time and time again. I’m in one of those seasons in which I’d like a few things to change. I really should keep in my sights that these things are truly minor in the grand scheme of things but that doesn’t always happen when I find myself in the thick of things. Maybe this is your experience right now. Or perhaps those things that you wish were not are of a greater and more far reaching nature. Whatever the case, it comes down to following the example of Jesus and speaking those words of surrender our Savior did in the Garden of Gethsemane. I’m sure you’re thinking right about now that my word is surrender. It isn’t although it’s to be my – and your – constant mindset. Continue reading

No Room in the Inn ~ M & M Monday

I have a confession to make. I’m glad next week is our review week for last week I spent more time pondering the lives of Mary and Martha than meditating upon and memorizing our verse. I’m okay with that as I definitely sensed the Lord pushing me to write about the sisters in the last M & M post and it was He who kept bringing them to mind as my life unfolded last week.  No matter what’s on our schedules this week, we can choose the Good Portion as Mary did.  He desires intimacy with us above anything we can do to serve Him or others. I love what a pastor once shared about this tale of two sisters. It’s adoration before action, devotion before duty, love before labor and worship before work. It’s truly a matter of priority and balance in our lives. How’s your life measuring up in this area?

Now I don’t think that Jesus wanted Martha to just sit at His feet and do nothing. After all, there are things to be done and He Himself served others.  We looked at His own words about His first coming.  He came to serve and not to be served. And we, too, are to share in this same mindset as Paul’s words in Philippians exhorted us last week. “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.“  Jesus didn’t hold onto His rights as God but emptied Himself by taking the form of a servant. A powerful picture to grasp as we focus on the Incarnate Christ this Advent season! Continue reading

The Son of Man ~ M & M Monday

It’s great to have an extra week between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. That will surely take some of the pressure off.  Well, maybe, as long as we don’t add more to our lives because there’s “more” time! It’s so easy to respond as Martha did when she was preparing for Jesus’ visit to her home. The preparations became the focus of her experience and she became overwhelmed as her reaction to her sister’s lack of help testified. This can so easily happen to us especially during this season, don’t you think? We can get focused on all the preparations, all the things we think we need to do, all the things we think we need to buy and before you know it, we become overwhelmed and those around us may become the recipients of our reactions.  But most importantly, we lose sight of Jesus, the One we’re preparing for. After all, without His birth, there would be none of this.  Mary had the right idea.  She left aside those things that in reality were not that important and sat at Jesus’ feet.  How about you? Will you stop and sit as Mary did? That’s what we’re focused on this season on M & M Monday.  Join us for a few minutes. Grab a cup of coffee or tea or maybe your beverage of choice is a diet coke as mine is! Let’s ponder His first coming today and purpose to spend time at His feet daily. Continue reading

Emmanuel ~ M & M Monday

It’s not quite December but Thanksgiving is behind us. We barely put away the leftovers and our attention is toward all things Christmas. Black Friday has turned into Black Thursday. Decorating, shopping, baking, cooking, wrapping, gatherings with family and friends…. all on top of the usual demands on our already busy lives. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the holiday preparations and have little time left over to seek the One whose birth we are celebrating. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we’ll be focusing on the Incarnate Christ.  We hope you’ll join us in memorizing and meditating on the Word that will keep our focus on the reason for this season!

In two short verses that we’ll be memorizing this week,  Paul gives us a beautiful picture tying together the birth of Christ and His resurrection.   As I’ve pondered over this verse, it’s not only the connection of these events in such few words that has caught my attention.  The words of Luke, Matthew and John have reverberated in my mind as I’ve read this verse.  This is what Paul had to say about the coming of our Savior:

Praise and Thanksgiving ~ M & M Monday

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

I read these words and cannot help but be filled with gratitude to God.  How about you?  Look at all He does for us! He forgives ALL my iniquity and yours. He heals ALL our diseases. He redeems our lives from the pit ……  I wonder if Paul was thinking of Psalm 103 as he penned these words: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3).

We have so much to be thankful for as we “forget not all his benefits” but what I love most about this psalm is its’ focus on praising the One who gives us all His benefits.  Bless the Lord, O my soul ….. Whether we’re on the mountain top or in the valley or somewhere in between,  these words etched in our minds and hearts can give way to praise and thanksgiving to the One from whom all blessings flow.

Time to Give Thanks! ~ M & M Monday

Today marks the beginning of a new session of memorizing here at T2 Women. We hope if you’re reading this that you will join us as we hide God’s Word in our hearts. I’m sure you’ve noticed that the blogosphere is filled with posts of thanksgiving this month. We’re joining in here on M & M Monday for the next few weeks. We’ve already been giving thanks on facebook and hope you’ll follow us there!

What are you giving thanks for this thanksgiving season? We have much to give thanks for, don’t we? But would you agree that sometimes it’s difficult to give thanks in certain seasons of our lives? I think we’ve all been there. We know what God commands in His Word. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” ( I Thessalonians 5:16-18). But we struggle to give thanks in all things. I read this from The Quiet Place by Nancy Leigh Demoss’ earlier this month and it sure spoke to my heart so I thought I’d share it with those of you who may find yourself struggling to give thanks today. “It may feel a bit insincere to give thanks under certain circumstances, perhaps even manipulative. But we counsel and train our hearts by such steps of obedience. Offer the sacrifice of thanks, and let God’s truth lift and sustain your spirit.”   Continue reading

We’re Giving Thanks and Hiding His Word ~ M & M Monday

It’s review week! Those 5 weeks flew by, didn’t they? I have a question for you. But before we get to that, we just wanted to let you know that we’re giving thanks this month of Thanksgiving. You can join us every day on facebook as we share what we are thankful for.  You can even join in with us by adding your thanks to our posts.  M & M Monday will also be thanks focused next week.  But let’s not forget to give thanks every day of the year! Now to that question!

Have you committed to memorizing Scripture with us? This spiritual discipline will help us to grow spiritually mature but we must discipline ourselves to be diligent and faithful in this endeavor!  I haven’t memorized all 5 verses this time around nor have I used ScriptureTyper as much as I should have. Life is busy and sometimes I choose lesser things but I’m going to keep moving forward and I hope that you will as well.

If you haven’t committed to join us yet, we certainly would like you to join us.  Here’s a word from Sue about making this commitment.

”Hey! Sue here with a quick note to encourage you if you’d like to memorize Scripture. If you know you should and know that it would be a great benefit to you but you haven’t made the commitment for whatever reason, let me just say “ditto”!  I’ve never been very good at memorizing and frankly I can usually quote a verse but can’t tell you where it is!  Or I can find it in my Bible (top righthand corner) but I’m lost in any other Bible. I know God promises He will bless our efforts and I’d really like to get better at this.

Pam has been prodding us each week with her posts on Monday, so I’m going to make an effort FINALLY to begin to memorize God’s Word. ONLY I’ve already told Pam that I’m going to need to take baby steps. That means I’ll memorize one verse not three and I’ll be using the new aid at ScriptureTyper where you only need to type the first letter and it will fill in the word for you!! I think that with all that help, I just may be able to do this!!:) If you’d like to join me in taking baby steps, I’d love to have others along with me!!”

Well, whether you need to take baby steps or just make the commitment and do it, now’s the time to join us. Sue mentioned ScriptureTyper. At the end of every M & M Monday post, you’ll find a button that will direct you right to our Bible Memory group. You can join our group and choose your preferences. You can choose the first letter option or type out the whole word. You can also choose whether or not to type punctuation as well as the verse reference. It can be as easy or difficult as you wish it to be!

Every post also includes a picture with the verse for the week. You can download this picture as your desktop wallpaper or save it to your screen and open it when you can spend a few minutes to memorize. Sue mentioned something about one verse or three. Well, I can’t promise one only verse each week but if there is more than one verse, I’ll list two memorizing options.  And lastly, each M & M session is 5 weeks long with a week between each session for review. There you have it! If you’re new to M & M Monday, welcome!  If you have been memorizing with us or have just decided to begin, let us know in the comment section and we’ll be praying for you!

Are you weak? ~ M & M Monday

What Scripture passage first comes to your mind when you hear the word contentment?  Now I know that we’ve memorized Hebrews 13:5 and 1 Timothy 6:6-7 so maybe one of those verses was your first answer!  But my first response would have to be Paul’s words to the saints in Philippi . “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”   (4:11-13)  The context of this passage is clearly in the area of finances and daily provision. We may struggle with contentment in these areas but we know that we can learn to be content.  Paul did.  He learned the secret.  I think it’s the same secret that the Psalmist shared when he wrote “Seek the Lord and His strength, seek His presence continually.” (105:4)  We need God’s strength all the time, don’t we?

But that is not all that Paul had to say about contentment. Paul had something to say to the Corinthians as well. His words here never really jumped out at me until recently.

Now I’ll be honest with you. I don’t really struggle with contentment in the area of finances and possessions. Oh, once in a great while, I may wish for more than I have but it’s not something I struggle with. I don’t desire what others have. The majority of the time what I have is enough. But to say as Paul did that I am content with weaknesses, insults, persecutions.  Well, that’s a different story.  I’m reminded of James’ words to count it all joy when we encounter various trials.  I get that.  Those trials will lead to my maturity but to say that I’m content with insults, persecutions, weaknesses….  Other translations use the words ” I delight in” and ” I take pleasure in” rather than the words “I am content with”.  Hmmm… maybe I don’t quite get that counting it all joy after all.

In order to understand why Paul can state with such confidence his contentment in these various circumstances, we must look at the passage these words are taken from.  We’ll start with verse 7 but feel free to read from verse 1 this week as you have opportunity. “So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.  Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.  But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

As I read this passage, I can see why Paul said that he is content.  With his weakness came God’s sufficient grace and power. In his weakness, he received God’s strength.  Remember Paul’s words to the Philippians!   Paul experienced all kinds of insults, hardships, persecutions and calamities.  I’ll never experience all Paul did.  Yet like Paul I can be content.

Are you weak?  I am.  I can’t possibly do all there is in my life during this season.  But I try.  Over and over again I try.  I ask the Lord to remove from my life so that I can do it. That’s pride and  independence.  I’ll share what He has been patiently speaking to me over and over again.  He doesn’t want to change anything but me.  He shows me that I walk in my own strength and sufficiency and you know, I have no strength or sufficiency so I fail.  He tells me to seek Him and His strength and His presence continually. So today, I’ll do as Paul did and “boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”  What about you?  Do you need to do the same? May God bless you this week as you meditate and memorize 2 Corinthians 12:10.

Where’s your hope? ~ M & M Monday

Contentment to storing up treasures…..That’s the path we’ve taken the last few weeks here at M & M Monday. I’ll get to this week’s passage in a moment. Did you know that we have a Bible Memory Group over at ScriptureTyper? You can join us there by clicking this link which you’ll find at the end of all our Monday posts.

ScriptureTyper is a great memorization tool.  If you have any questions about using this site and/or connecting with our group, email us at thet2women.com.

I shared 1 Timothy 6:17-19  in last week’s post and it’s a perfect verse to follow Matthew 6:19-21.  Now that we’ve had a chance to look at where we are storing up treasure and thereby knowing where our heart is, we can now focus on how to store treasure that will be awaiting us in the future.

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19

This is such a rich passage. We may not consider ourselves rich in this present age but we have more than most in the world and that would easily make this verse applicable to us. Timothy is to admonish the rich not to be proud as it’s the Lord who has given them all that they have. God has not just provided but has richly provided us with everything for our enjoyment. Nor are we to set our hopes on our riches.  Don’t you think that it would be enough for us to set our hopes on God just knowing that He is our provider? Yet Paul reminds us of the fact that riches are fleeting. Our hope should be in the Lord for He will never leave us nor forsake us.  Remember Hebrews 13:5 from a few weeks ago! When our hope is in the Lord, we will be able to say “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” just as Paul did.

Besides placing their hope in God, Paul tells the rich in this present age that they should do good, be rich in good works and generous and ready to share. Could another reason God gives riches be so we can  be generous and share? We can be doing these things no matter the size of our bank accounts for if we are wise stewards of what the Lord has given us, we will have something to share. And even in times of poverty, the Macedonian church is our example in giving.  The high point of this verse in my opinion is the end.  As we store up treasure for the future, we will “take hold of that which is truly life’!

Where’s your hope -  in your riches whether meager or substantial or in God?  Have you taken hold of that which is truly life? May the Lord bless you this week as you meditate on and memorize this passage and allow Him to transform you through His Word!
