The Secrets to Attracting LOTS of Hummingbirds

My husband and I moved from New England to Tennessee thirteen years ago and right away began to notice hummingbird feeders in some of our neighbors’ yards so we thought we’d try putting some up too. I believe we began with just two feeders, but as we began to experiment and learn more about the hummingbirds and what they like, we had to keep adding more and more feeders to the property simply so that we wouldn’t have to fill them more than once a day, for our hummingbirds can empty one feeder in a matter of hours! We currently have 10 large feeders and go through 10 pounds of sugar a week! Here’s how we did it!

1.) It’s important to purchase a feeder that has a perch to it. We have found that just like us, the hummingbirds like to sit and relax while dinning.

2.)  Most importantly, it’s the recipe or “The Sauce” as my husband, John calls it, and because feeders come in different sizes I’m going to give the ingredients in percentages.

Hummingbird Sauce

* Start with 30% Pure Cane Sugar.
* Add 60% hot tap water. (Some boil the sugar & water and allow to cool, but we simply shake or stir until the sugar is melted.)
*Finish with (10%) Ready to Use Hummingbird Nectar.

3.) Place the feeders in small trees or areas where they can perch and you can enjoy them. They are not very timid at all as you can tell by the video. They will get use to you very quickly. They have even tried to perch and eat while we were trying to hook the feeder back on the hook!

We also have a Baltimore Oriole and a Red Headed Woodpecker that drink from the feeders as well, but they are a lot harder to photograph.

4.) You should change “the sauce” routinely. Don’t leave it up there all season, for they will loose interest after awhile.

If you do decide to follow our advice, we hope you’ll come back and let us know how it all works in the comments!

Summertime Granola Bars

Mail

Summer seems to have arrived early this year and during this time of year I’m forever looking for recipes I can make for the family that doesn’t require using the oven. I found this granola bar recipe last year and they were an instant hit with everyone! Best of all it’s super easy, fast and I usually have all the ingredients on hand to make them whenever the craving for chocolate strikes!

Summertime Granola Bars

Ingredients:

1 Cup Butter

½ Cup Brown Sugar

1 teaspoon Vanilla

2 Cups Old Fashion Oats

1 Cup Quick Cooking Oats

½ Cup finally chopped nuts (Pecan, Walnuts or Almonds)

1 Cup Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips

½ Cup Peanut Butter

Directions

Lightly Grease a 11”x 7” inch square pan.

  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar and vanilla until blended. Add the oats and cook over low heat 2 to 3 minutes stirring constantly until ingredients are well blended. Firmly press half of mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Reserve the rest for topping.
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips and peanut butter. Microwave on high for about 1 minute. Remove from the microwave and stir chips and peanut butter until smooth. Pour the chocolate mixture over the crust in the pan, and spread evenly with a knife or spatula.
  3. Spread the remaining oat mixture over the chocolate layer, pressing in gently. Cover, and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. Bring to room temperature before cutting into bars.
  4. Enjoy!

In my teens and even early twenties, I never read the Bible, rarely attended church and thought myself to be wise. I knew what I wanted and how things ought to be; at least I thought I did. At times, circumstances would hit and leave me wondering about this life and the next and even about God. Was He real? If so, where was He? And most importantly, how do I get His attention? And if I’m honest, I often wondered if all that I knew to be true, really was! Can you relate?
It was during some of those times when I picked up my tiny pocket New Testament I kept tucked away in a drawer and decided I was going to start reading to find the answers to my questions. I’d start right on page one, which was Matthew, chapter one and read down half the page and then stop, look up, and begin to wonder, “What in the world did I just read!??” Then I closed up the book, tuck it back in the drawer and went on my way again.
Finally, at twenty-four, my husband and I decided it was time to take our little family to church. It was there I began to understand the Bible and who Christ Jesus was and still is. I can also tell you that once I began to understand His Word, all of life began to make complete sense! One of my favorite verses has always been:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
 Hebrews 13:8

And so is His Word. The world and everything in it is changing constantly; marriages, families, relationships, jobs, health, status; you name it, nothing stays the same forever! But just knowing He is the same today as He was yesterday and will continue to remain the same forever, that very thought can bring such incredible peace…
People are going to fail us at times. We can’t count on everything remaining the same tomorrow, but there is One who is constant. One who knows us better than we know ourselves. One who desires to go through this life with us, so that we will never have to go it alone. One who not only wants you to succeed in life but to shine, and don’t we all want that?!

I hope you’ll join us! sue
